Three things your Physio wants you to know

In life there are profession specific perspectives that can only be achieved when working in that industry. Here are some from a physiotherapists point of view:

  1. Problems that seem to arise for “no reason” are usually as a result of disuse or lack of movement

The cause of pain isn’t always easy to identify, although it is common to want to know why the pain has occurred. Injury is just as likely to occur as a result of disuse and inactivity, as well as from an accident.

The human body is designed to move, however the daily routine of modern-day life doesn’t allow for this. The long periods of sitting can case joints to stiffen, muscles to shorter and weaken, and nerves to become extra sensitive.

Physiotherapist’s are such strong advocates for movement and for good reason, as movement promotes joint health by assisting the movement of joint fluid that provides nutrients to the joint structures.

2.Bad habits are heard to break, but the best time to make a change is today.

Small and gradual changes have the potential to perpetuate into big effects in the future, hence you should aim to incorporate as much exercise into your routine as possible from an early age. The older you get, the harder it becomes to be fit and active, especially if you lacked fitness earlier in life.

3. Pain is affected by so much more than just tissues damage.

How an individual perceives pain can have a huge impact on how you experience pain. Unfortunately, being fearful and anxious can amplify symptoms of pain. Often thoughts can go straight to the worst-case scenario, however this is very unlikely and seeking the professional treatment of a physiotherapist can help to ensure the best possible outcomes.
