What is Osteitis Pubis?
Osteitis Pubis is a painful condition affecting the front of the pelvis, specifically the pubic symphysis — the joint where the left and right pubic bones meet. It involves inflammation caused by repetitive stress or overuse, most commonly in athletes who run, kick, or change direction frequently. Sports like football, soccer, and long-distance running are often linked to this injury.
What Causes It?
The root cause is usually instability in the pelvic region. When the muscles around the pelvis aren’t providing proper support, excessive strain is placed on the pubic joint. Over time, this leads to irritation and inflammation of the joint and surrounding tissues.
Symptoms to Look Out For
- Pain at the front of the pelvis or groin
- Discomfort during or after running, kicking, or other weight-bearing activities
- Pain may radiate into the hip, lower abdomen, or inner thigh
- Morning stiffness or pain after periods of rest
- A history of groin strains, lower back pain, or sports-related hernias is common
How Can Physiotherapy Help?
A physiotherapist will assess your posture, muscle strength, flexibility, and movement patterns to identify the underlying causes of the condition. Treatment usually includes:
- Rest from aggravating activities to allow healing
- Strengthening and stretching exercises for pelvic stability
- Retraining movement patterns such as walking, running, and kicking
- A gradual return-to-sport plan over 3 to 6 months, depending on severity
With proper rehab, most people can return to their sport pain-free and with better movement control to prevent recurrence.
Note: Always seek professional medical advice for an accurate diagnosis and personalised treatment plan.
