Knee discomfort can stem from various sources and may manifest in different ways. While each person’s situation is unique, the following suggestions could help ease knee pain during daily activities:
1. Wear Proper Footwear
Footwear plays a significant role in knee health. Shoes without proper support, as well as high heels, can lead to muscle tightness and poor walking mechanics. This may place extra strain on the knees. Consulting with a physiotherapist can help determine whether your footwear is contributing to your discomfort and what alternatives may be better suited for you.
2. Modify How You Sleep
Although sleep usually gives our knees a break, certain positions can still add unnecessary pressure. Sleeping on your side with bent knees can create tension around the outer thigh and knee area. Try to keep your knees extended slightly—at least 30 degrees—and consider placing a pillow between your knees if you lie on your side.
If you prefer lying on your back, placing a pillow beneath your knees may relieve stress on the joint by allowing a gentle bend. Try different pillow placements to discover what feels most comfortable for you.
3. Stay Active and Avoid Prolonged Sitting
It’s natural to want to rest when you’re in pain, but too much inactivity can actually worsen knee problems. Our joints benefit from regular, gentle movement.
If activities like running are too painful, consider lower-impact alternatives such as swimming or cycling. Additionally, sitting for long stretches can place added pressure on the kneecap. When seated for extended periods, try stretching your legs out and avoid crossing them.
4. Don’t Delay Professional Help
Sometimes, mild knee discomfort can develop into more serious issues if not addressed early. Seeking advice from a physiotherapist can help identify the cause of your symptoms and guide you toward effective treatment. Taking action early can make a big difference in your recovery.
